Product Description The Bb5 Sicilian is a logical and practical weapon against Blacks most popular defence to 1 e4 and is an excellent choice for White players who are fed up of constantly trying to keep abreast of the latest developments in the Open Sicilian. The early bishop move signals White intention to develop rapidly and it can lead to both wild gambit play and calmer positional waters. Significantly, this opening weapon has the seal of approval from many of todays elite Grandmasters, including Vishy Anand, Mickey Adams and Peter Leko, while Garry Kasparov utilised it successfully in his famous Internet game versus the rest of the world. Now, for the first time in many years, Richard Palliser provides a comprehensive study of the Bb5 Sicilian and its many variations. Using illustrative games, he examines both the crucial main lines and the more unusual tries for White and Black, highlighting tactical and positional ideas as well as move order nuances.
The Bb5 Sicilian
About this title The systems with 3 Bb5 against the Sicilian Defence have an excellent reputation for avoiding heavy duty theoretical clashes while maintaining plenty of tension in the position. The immediate tactical melees that often arise after an early d4 are avoided and the focus is on creating double-edged middlegame positions. Sometimes the bishop drops back to b3, creating Ruy Lopez-type struggles. On other occasions White captures a knight on c6, weakening the black pawn structure but conceding the bishop pair. Finally if Black chooses a slow system of development White can change tack and revert to a quick d2-d4 hoping for a swift attack. The Move by Move series provides an ideal format for the keen chessplayer to improve their game. While reading you are continually challenged to answer probing questions — a method that greatly encourages the learning and practising of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of chess knowledge.
